Southern Miss Forward Tylik Weeks Named Finalist for Mississippi Howell Trophy

JACKSON — Tylik Weeks, a junior forward for the University of Southern Mississippi men’s basketball team, has been named a finalist for the Howell Trophy, awarded by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum. The award recognizes the top college basketball player in Mississippi, selected by a panel of statewide media members.

Weeks, a New York native, averaged 19.7 points per game this season, leading the league in scoring and finishing second in conference play with 20.1 points per game behind Sun Belt Player of the Year Chaze Harris. He also averaged 5.4 rebounds over 34 games, with a streak of 21 straight games scoring in double figures, the second-longest in program history.

He scored 15 20-point games and four 30-point games, including a career-high 37 points against North Florida and a 32-point effort against Troy, where he scored 16 consecutive points. His 30 points in the second half of that game made him the first Southern Miss player to hit 30 points in one half without overtime. Weeks also posted double-doubles against Ole Miss and Kent State and shot 47% from the field in league play.

In addition, Weeks was named Sun Belt Player of the Week on Nov. 25 after scoring 37 points off the bench against North Florida and contributing 14 points and seven rebounds in the conference tournament final, which Southern Miss won. He led the league in free throws made and attempts and is the highest-scoring Golden Eagle since Bernard Haslett in 1993-94.

The finalists for the men’s Howell Trophy are Weeks, Jackson State’s Daeshun Ruffin, and Mississippi State’s Josh Hubbard. The three will be honored at a luncheon April 15 at the Golden Moon Casino, with special guest Jan Sojourner, a legendary high school coach from Jackson Prep. Proceeds benefit the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.

The Howell Trophy is part of the Outstanding Player Awards Series, which also includes awards for football and baseball. More information and ticket purchases are available at msfame.com.
