Southern Miss Forward Djahi Binet Named Sun Belt Player of the Week
NEW ORLEANS — Southern Miss graduate forward Djahi Binet has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Binet opened his week with a 31-point, 15-rebound game at Marshall on Wednesday. His effort marked the first time this season a Sun Belt player scored at least 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in a game. Binet is one of only three players in the conference to achieve that feat since last season, joining former Golden Eagle Denijay Harris.
The Nice, France, native also contributed two assists, two steals, and two blocks against Marshall. He followed that with 17 points and seven rebounds in a win over Kent State on Saturday. His performance boosted his weekly averages to 24.0 points and 11.0 rebounds.
During the season, Binet is averaging 10.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, with 12.8 points and 9.4 rebounds in Sun Belt play. He also has a team-high 25 blocks this season, including one in the recent MAC-SBC Challenge.
Binet joins Tylik Weeks as the only Golden Eagles to earn Sun Belt Player of the Week this season. Weeks received the honor on Nov. 25 after being named MVP of the Pensacola Invitational. Overall, Binet is the seventh Southern Miss player to earn the weekly award since joining the Sun Belt.
