Southern Miss Ends Skid With 73-65 Win Over James Madison
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Tylik Weeks scored 28 points, including 14 in the second half, to help Southern Miss defeat James Madison 73-65 Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum. The victory ends a three-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles, who improved to 12-11 overall and 5-6 in Sun Belt Conference play, according to school officials.
Weeks has now scored 20 or more points in three consecutive games, the first Southern Miss player to do so since January 2022, sources said. He also made 14 of 28 free throws, the most makes by a Golden Eagle since at least 2009. Dylan Brumfield and Dalyn Brandon added 10 and 8 points, respectively, with Brandon making his first start since November and playing a season-high 24 minutes.
Southern Miss built an early lead, with Izzy Hart scoring back-to-back baskets to help establish an 8-4 advantage four minutes into the game. The Golden Eagles led 29-21 at halftime and extended their lead in the second half. Weeks scored 14 straight points at one stretch, fueling a 6-0 run that put Southern Miss ahead for good, according to game officials.
The team shot 45.7% from the field, its best since January 8, and made 24 of 28 free throws in the second half. James Madison struggled at the line, missing eight of 20 free throws overall. Cliff Davis led the Dukes with 10 points, but the team could not overcome the Golden Eagles’ offensive surge.
Southern Miss, which leads the all-time series 3-1, now owns a 3-0 record at Reed Green Coliseum against James Madison.
