Southern Miss baseball wins Sun Belt series with 5-4 victory over Troy
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Mississippi’s baseball team secured its first Sun Belt Conference series win of the season Sunday, defeating Troy 5-4 at Pete Taylor Park. The Golden Eagles improved to 19-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Southern Miss trailed 4-0 after three innings but rallied with two runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the sixth to tie the game. Davis Gillespie hit a two-run homer in the third, and Seth Smith drove in a run in the sixth to help the Golden Eagles level the score.
In the seventh, Matthew Russo drew a walk to start the inning. After a flyout and a wild pitch, freshman Gray Eubanks singled, scoring Russo for the go-ahead run. Camden Clark entered in relief and retired Troy in the seventh and eighth innings, earning the victory to improve to 4-0. Clark struck out three and allowed only one hit in 2 1/3 innings.
The Trojans scored once in the ninth, but Clark closed the game with a strikeout of Jimmy Janicki. Troy fell to 10-13 overall and 3-3 in conference play. Cooper Ellingworth took the loss, falling to 0-2 after allowing a run over 2 1/3 innings.
The Golden Eagles will next face Mississippi State on Tuesday in Starkville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., according to school officials.
