Southern Miss Baseball Opens Series at Louisiana on Friday
The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team will play its second straight Sun Belt Conference road series starting Friday against Louisiana at Russo Park in Lafayette, La. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central Time. The series can be streamed on ESPN+ and followed via live stats and radio broadcasts, according to the university.
The Golden Eagles, holding a 24-9 overall record and a 7-5 league mark, have won their last two games and three of their past four. They have swept all four games played in Louisiana this season and have won eight consecutive contests in the Pelican State, according to team statistics.
Louisiana enters the series with a 19-14 record and a 4-8 conference standing. The Ragin’ Cajuns recently lost a 7-6 midweek game at Southeastern Louisiana and dropped their last two games at James Madison. Both teams are looking to climb the league standings this weekend.
Southern Miss is tied for third place with ULM, one game behind Texas State and four behind league leader Coastal Carolina. Louisiana is tied for 11th place with Georgia State, Georgia Southern, and Old Dominion.
Several Golden Eagles are riding hitting streaks of six or more games. Joey Urban leads with an 11-game streak, batting .326 with 15 runs and two home runs over that span. Kyle Morrison has an eight-game streak and has hit safely in 28 of 33 games this season. Ben Higdon has a six-game streak, batting .292 during that period. Matthew Russo and Seth Smith also have four-game streaks, with Russo reaching base in 24 consecutive games, the longest of the season for the team.
Southern Miss, which defeated New Orleans 3-2 Tuesday, is 8-2 in one-run games this season. Since the start of 2024, the program has a 28-10 record in games decided by one run and is 38-16 in games decided by one or two runs under head coach Christian Ostrander.
The pitching rotation for the series will feature left-hander Grayden Harris (5-1, 3.50 ERA) and right-hander Camden Sunstrom (2-2, 2.77 ERA) for the first two games. The starter for the third game is yet to be announced. After facing Louisiana, the Golden Eagles will travel to Ole Miss for a Tuesday game at 6 p.m., where they will be the designated visiting team.
