Southern Miss Baseball Hosts Ole Miss in Final Homestand Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The University of Southern Mississippi baseball team will host Ole Miss on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Pete Taylor Park. The game marks the end of a six-game homestand for the Golden Eagles, who have posted a 4-1 record during that stretch.

Southern Miss (14-2) recently achieved its best 16-game start since 1995 and 2004. The team boasts a top-10 national ranking in multiple polls, including a high of No. 6. The Eagles opened the season with eight wins over Top 40 teams, earning the No. 1 spot in NCAA RPI rankings through the first month of play.

Ole Miss (15-2) enters the game with a No. 8 RPI ranking. The Rebels swept Evansville last weekend and are ranked as high as No. 16 nationally.

Southern Miss features center fielder Joey Urban, who has been named Sun Belt Player of the Week twice. Urban leads the team with a .373 batting average, five home runs, and 17 RBIs. Kyle Morrison follows with a .340 average, two triples, two home runs, and 19 RBIs, including a five-RBI game against North Alabama.

The Eagles have hit 24 home runs in 16 games, with a home run in 14 contests. On the mound, Southern Miss has a team ERA of 2.68, ranking eighth nationally. The pitching staff has struck out 171 batters while walking only 53 in 141 innings.

Junior right-hander Thomas Crabtree is expected to start for the Eagles. Following Tuesday’s game, Southern Miss will open Sun Belt Conference play on Friday at Arkansas State.
