Prairie View Sweeps Alcorn in SWAC Softball Doubleheader
Prairie View A&M swept a SWAC softball doubleheader from Alcorn State on Saturday at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The Panthers won the first game 8-3 and completed the sweep with an 8-0 victory in five innings during the second game, according to the schools.
In the opener, Kearstin Tinsley drove in two runs with a single in the second inning, and Prairie View pulled away with six runs over the fifth and sixth frames. Yazmyn Stewart pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits in seven innings, with two strikeouts and five walks, the schools said.
Prairie View’s offense was led by Mia Nunez, who contributed a double, a triple, and two RBIs. Nunez also scored twice. Prairie View’s starting pitcher, Stewart, improved to 4-2 with the win. Alcorn’s Alainah Felton took the loss, falling to 1-4 after surrendering all eight runs on nine hits over six innings.
The Panthers continued their dominance in the second game, with Mia Nunez hitting two inside-the-park home runs. Kayla Adams threw a five-inning shutout, striking out four and needing just 63 pitches. Nunez finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Zaid went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, according to the schools.
Alcorn, now 9-14 overall and 0-4 in SWAC play, was held scoreless in the second game. Starting pitcher Chiara Olison took the loss, falling to 6-8 after allowing eight runs, six earned, on nine hits in five innings. Centerfielder Yahnya Acevedo was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Braves.
Alcorn is scheduled to face Nicholls State on Tuesday at 5 p.m., the school said. The team and Prairie View continue conference play as they look to improve their standings in the SWAC.
