Prairie View Edges Alcorn State in Ninth-Inning Rally
PEARL, Miss. — Prairie View A&M scored seven runs in the top of the ninth inning Saturday night to defeat Alcorn State 15-10 in a non-conference game at Trustmark Park. The matchup was part of the HBCU Power Series hosted by Major League Baseball.
Prairie View improved to 2-0 with the victory, breaking open a close game with a four-run fourth and a seven-run seventh, collecting 11 hits and drawing 12 walks. Alcorn State fell to 0-2, tallying 10 hits but leaving 10 runners on base and committing three errors.
The Braves took an early lead, scoring once in the first inning. Prairie View responded with two runs in the second. Alcorn answered with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by an RBI double from Kanious Davis, to take a 4-2 lead. The Panthers then staged a rally, scoring four runs in the sixth and adding a run in the seventh before exploding for seven runs in that inning to go ahead 8-5.
Alcorn refused to back down, scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth to regain the lead at 10-8. However, Prairie View responded with a decisive seven-run ninth inning and held the Braves scoreless in the bottom half to seal the win.
Cooper Harris drove in three runs for Alcorn, while Davis had three RBIs. Rayfield Adams III led the offense with three hits and two RBIs, and Jaylyn Bennet added two hits and an RBI. Jacob Wingard started for the Braves, allowing three runs (two earned) over 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. The team used seven pitchers overall. K. Davis took the loss in relief, while Prairie View reliever Kaleb Thompkins earned the win after pitching 2/3 of an inning in relief.
Weather forecasts indicate thunderstorms could impact the Jackson area overnight.
