Prairie View A&M tops Mississippi Valley State 72-62 in SWAC game
PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — Prairie View A&M defeated Mississippi Valley State 72-62 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday at the William Nicks Building. The Panthers improved to 11-16 overall and 6-8 in league play, while the Delta Devils dropped to 1-26 overall and 0-13 in SWAC action.
Mississippi Valley State was competitive throughout the game, with James, Mayfield, and Childress all scoring in double figures. The Delta Devils led the series historically, holding a 56-37 advantage since the 1983-84 season, but Prairie View secured its fourth consecutive win in the series.
Daniel Mayfield scored 15 points, making six of 10 shots, including two three-pointers. He also contributed six rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Michael James led all scorers with 20 points, connecting on all seven free throws and adding three assists. Xzayvion Childress scored 11 points, mostly from the free-throw line, making seven of eight attempts. Samuel Murray, back for the first time since early December, added six points and three rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.
X’Zaevion Barnett was the top defensive player for Mississippi Valley State, recording three steals and the team’s only blocked shot of the night. The Delta Devils are set to honor seniors Daniel Mayfield, George Ivory III, and Lamont Sams, along with team manager Joshua Westmoreland, before their next game against Texas Southern at 5 p.m. Saturday.
