Prairie View A&M Overcomes Alcorn in SWAC Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Prairie View A&M overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Alcorn State 65-56 in the second round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday at The Gateway Center Arena.

Dontae Horne scored a game-high 26 points, including a crucial second-half performance that helped turn the game in favor of the Panthers. Prairie View A&M (15-17) outscored Alcorn 43-30 after halftime, advancing to the quarterfinals. Horne finished 5-of-12 from the field and was perfect from the free-throw line, adding three assists and eight rebounds.

Prairie View’s momentum shifted early in the second half, sparked by Horne’s step-back three-pointer and a fast-break layup. Lance Williams contributed eight points in the second half and dished three assists. Cory Wells hit a key three-pointer with 2:55 remaining, extending the Panthers’ lead to eight and sealing the victory. Elijah Mitchell added five points and the final dunk with 31 seconds left.

Alcorn (9-23) was led by Jameel Morris, who scored 24 points and opened the game with 10 in the first quarter. The Braves took an early 11-0 lead, fueled by Morris’s scoring and turnovers that led to transition baskets. Nick Woodard added seven points, including a three, while Omari Hamilton contributed three points.

The Braves maintained a slim lead at halftime, 26-22, thanks to Morris’s scoring and a late layup from Hamilton. Prairie View responded in the second half, with Williams and Horne orchestrating the comeback. The Panthers dominated in the paint, outscoring Alcorn 32-22 in the area, and outscored the Braves 13-2 on the bench.

Prairie View was led by Horne’s 26 points and Williams’s 17. Alcorn’s Morris finished with 25 points, while Woodard added 10. The team was limited by injuries and relied heavily on starters, which impacted their bench scoring.
