Prairie View A&M edges Jackson State in overtime thriller

Prairie View A&M defeated Jackson State 85-76 in overtime during a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Thursday night at the William J. Nicks Building.

Jackson State, with a 9-19 overall record and 8-7 in the SWAC, played without second-leading scorer Jayme Mitchell Jr. The Tigers were led by Daeshun Ruffin, who scored 28 points and dished out six assists. Tamarion Hoover added 13 points off the bench, and Devin Ree posted 11 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double in a Jackson State uniform.

The Tigers shot 39.7% from the field, making 25 of 63 attempts, and 34.6% from beyond the arc, hitting nine of 26. They also converted 17 of 22 free throws for 77.3%. Prairie View A&M, with a 12-17 record and 7-9 in SWAC, finished the game shooting 36.1% from the floor and 47.8% from three-point range. The Panthers went 22 of 24 at the free throw line for 91.7%, led by Dontae Horn’s 26 points and 13 rebounds.

In the first half, Jackson State shot 44% from the field and 36.4% from three, while connecting on all seven free throws. Prairie View shot 36.7%, hitting 11 of 30 shots, and made three of eight three-pointers, with a 6-of-7 free throw percentage. The Tigers trailed by as many as nine in the first half but closed the gap with a 12-1 run to end the period, outrebounding the Panthers 17-15 in the process.

During the second half, Jackson State shot 50% from the field and 41.7% from three, also making 9 of 11 free throws. Prairie View shot 35.3% overall and 63.6% from beyond the arc, making all 13 free throw attempts. In overtime, Jackson State was held without a basket and scored only on a free throw, sealing the Panthers’ win.
