Owls Women’s Tennis Beats Belhaven 5-2 in Road Match

JACKSON, Miss. — The Mississippi University for Women women’s tennis team improved its season record to 2-2 with a 5-2 victory over Belhaven University on the road, marking their second straight win, according to school officials.

The Owls opened the match by securing the doubles point. After losing No. 1 doubles, MUW’s Bailey Flynn and Austin Hays won No. 2 doubles 6-1. Emma Horton and Harley Lowry received a forfeit at third doubles, giving the Owls the edge.

Belhaven took a 2-1 lead in team score by winning No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. However, MUW responded strongly, sweeping the remaining four singles matches. Flynn defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to tie the team score at 3-3.

Alaina Mathis, playing at No. 4 singles, improved to 4-0 this season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. With the score at 4-2, Lowry clinched the match for MUW at No. 5 singles, winning the third set 6-3 after splitting the first two sets.

Belhaven forfeited No. 6 singles, finalizing the match at 5-2 in favor of the Owls.
