Owls Softball Sweeps The W Invitational, Extends Win Streak to Four

Mississippi University for Women’s softball team extended its winning streak to four games with victories over Covenant College and Sewanee at The W Invitational in Columbus, Mississippi, Saturday.

The Owls opened the day with a 5-1 win over Covenant College, using a four-run fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Brooklyn Rhodes earned her second win of the season, allowing one run on five hits over seven innings. Rhodes struck out five and walked one.

MUW took an early lead with a sacrifice fly by Madison York in the first inning that scored Gillion Eaves. In the fourth, Avery Johnston’s RBI double brought in Lynnzie Kennedy to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. York added a two-run triple, and Addison Owen contributed an RBI single, helping the team secure the victory. The top four batters—Eaves, York, Owen, and Rhodes—combined for eight hits and four RBIs in the game.

The second game against Sewanee was a dramatic nine-inning contest. The Owls mounted a comeback from an early deficit, overcoming a Sewanee lead and rallying in the late innings to win 7-6.

In the sixth inning, Eaves threw out Reagan Huskey at home plate to keep the game tied. Brianna Byrd’s RBI single in the sixth put MUW ahead briefly. Sewanee responded with a run in the seventh to tie the game at 2-2. Both teams scored in extra innings, tying at 3-3 after eight.

In the ninth, Sewanee’s first three batters singled, triple, and singled, pushing the Tigers ahead 6-3 before MUW responded. Lilly Harrison scored on wild pitches, then Chloe McClain’s double tied the game at 6-6. McClain then stole third and scored on a fielder’s choice by Madison York for the game-winning run. Etheridge earned the win in relief, pitching a scoreless inning. Freshman Trinity Garvin made her first collegiate start, allowing seven hits and one unearned run over 5.2 innings.
