Owls Lose Doubleheader to Aurora in Tucson

The William Carey baseball team’s six-game winning streak ended Friday with a doubleheader loss to Aurora University at the Kino Sports Complex in Tucson. The Owls (9-7) fell to the Spartans (7-6) by scores of 6-3 and 10-1.

In the first game, Campbell McCluney (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season, pitching five innings and allowing 11 hits and six earned runs. He struck out three and walked three. Will Carter pitched two scoreless innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Both teams combined for 24 hits, with Aurora collecting 13 and William Carey 11. Only one extra-base hit was recorded, a double by Aurora.

Every player in the Owls’ lineup recorded at least one hit. Seniors Matthew Windham and Baron Brack each went 2-for-4. In the second game, pitcher Robby Canten held Aurora to just one run over 4 1/3 innings before the Spartans broke the game open with a four-run fifth and a five-run sixth inning. Canten (1-2) struck out five and walked one in his outing. William Carey managed six hits, with Jay Marbutt and Jack Sledge each going 2-for-3. Windham, Marbutt, and Zach Johnson each doubled in the game.

The doubleheader concluded with Aurora winning both games, ending William Carey’s win streak and moving the Spartans closer to .500 on the season.
