Owls golf team earns weekly SLIAC honors with standout performances
Columbus, Miss. — William Carey University’s golf team swept the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Player of the Week honors, with senior Sara Grace Ramey and junior Collin Jones earning the awards, according to the league.
Both players competed last Monday and Tuesday at the LeTourneau University Crossing Creeks Invitational in Longview, Texas. Ramey led the Owls women’s team to a fifth-place finish in a competitive field. After a slow start with a 90 on day one, she shot a 77 on the second day, finishing with a total score of 167 and a 16th-place individual finish.
Ramey was the only golfer from outside California Lutheran, East Texas Baptist, or LeTourneau to place in the top 20 of the 84-player field, according to the league. Jones posted rounds of 72, 70 and 72, ending with a 4-over-par score of 214. His performance helped the Owls finish third, just one stroke behind second-place LeTourneau. Jones placed sixth overall, with just three shots separating him from the second-place finisher.
Jones, a transfer from NCAA Division I Nicholls State University, was among the top performers in the event. The team’s strong showing and the individual achievements earned both players the SLIAC weekly honors, league officials said.
