Ole Miss Men’s Tennis Suffers First Home Loss of Season to Georgia
OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss men’s tennis suffered its first home loss of the season Friday night, falling 5-2 to No. 11 Georgia at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center. The Rebels, ranked 19th nationally, entered the match with a perfect 10-0 record in Oxford this season, according to school officials.
Georgia took the doubles point early, with the Bulldogs’ duo of Derrick Chen and Santiago Giamichelle winning 6-4 over Ole Miss’s Stefano D’Agostino and Benjamin Martin. The Bulldogs then secured three straight singles victories to clinch the match, with Ole Miss winning two of the final three singles matches played.
Matthieu Chambonniere earned Ole Miss’s lone ranked singles win, defeating No. 38 Will Jansen of Georgia 6-1, 7-5. Noah Schlagenhauf added a second point for the Rebels, defeating Derrick Chen 6-4, 3-6, 10-1 in a third-set tiebreaker. Georgia closed out the match with wins on the remaining singles courts.
The Rebels will travel to face No. 12 Georgia next Friday at 3 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, aiming to rebound from their first home defeat this season.
In doubles, Georgia’s Giamichelle and Santiago Giamichelle defeated Ole Miss’s Stefano D’Agostino and Pietro Pampanin 6-4, while the Rebels’ Isac Stromberg and Kai Milburn were edged 5-4 in an unfinished match. Singles results saw Georgia’s Arda Azkara and Santiago Giamichelle both claim victories, with Giamichelle winning in three sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (10-6), over Ole Miss’s D’Agostino. Chambonniere’s win over Jansen was one of two for Ole Miss in singles play.
The Rebels are now 15-5 overall and 3-5 in SEC play, while Georgia improves to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in conference matches. The team will look to bounce back in upcoming matches against other top-ranked opponents.
