Ole Miss Honors Childhood Cancer Survivor as Kid Coach

Journey Cummins, a 9-year-old from Kosciusko, has been named a Kid Coach in a partnership between Children’s of Mississippi and the University of Mississippi’s athletic programs. The initiative celebrates pediatric patients and showcases their inspiring stories.

At 8 months old, Journey was diagnosed with a stage 3 Wilms tumor, a form of kidney cancer. Her treatment included surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy at Children’s of Mississippi. During her hospital stay, she wore a Halloween costume provided by child life specialists, received a visit from Santa, and even appeared in a commercial.

Now cancer-free for nearly eight years, Journey continues to inspire as she approaches her 10th birthday in July. She enjoys dancing competitively, painting, and watching cheerleading and dance competitions. Her infectious smile and friendly nature have made her a beloved figure both on and off the field.

Children’s of Mississippi and Ole Miss Athletics expressed pride in honoring Journey’s resilience and hope. The university encourages fans to support her during Friday’s game, where she will be celebrated. The partnership aims to remind the community of the bravery of pediatric patients and the importance of pediatric healthcare services.
