Oglethorpe beats Millsaps 10-7 in series finale
Oglethorpe University defeated Millsaps College 10-7 Saturday at Hermance Stadium in Atlanta. The Stormy Petrels scored five runs in the third and fifth innings to secure the win in the third game of the series.
The Majors trailed early but made a late rally. Sophomore Carston Williams led the offense with three hits and two runs scored. Freshman Michael Griggs delivered a pinch-hit grand slam, driving in four RBIs and scoring once. Sophomore Kyle Veal Jr. contributed with two RBIs and a hit, reaching base twice on walks. Senior Sam Thomas also reached base four times with two hits and two walks.
Millsaps took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning when Veal Jr. singled to bring home Wes Carr and Williams. Oglethorpe responded with a rally, including Trey Kinnan’s grand slam, giving the Petrels a 5-2 advantage. The Petrels extended their lead with five more runs in the fifth, highlighted by sacrifice flies and a three-run double, making it 10-2.
The Majors attempted a comeback in the sixth inning, loading the bases with walks and a single. Griggs then hit his grand slam, cutting the deficit to 10-7. Oglethorpe’s defense held strong in the final innings, preventing Millsaps from scoring further. The Majors threatened in the ninth with two runners on base but were ultimately shut down by a flyout and strikeout, ending the game.
