Northwest Mississippi women’s basketball clinches first 20-win season since 1998 with win over Mississippi Delta

MOORHEAD, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College women’s basketball team finished the regular season with a 78-60 win over Mississippi Delta, improving to 20-8 overall and 11-3 in conference play, according to school officials.

The game was closely contested in the first quarter, with both teams tied at nine points before the Rangers pulled ahead with a 7-2 run to end the period. Northwest continued its offensive surge in the second quarter, scoring 28 points and taking an 18-point lead into halftime.

The Rangers maintained their offensive momentum in the third quarter, adding 21 points. Although scoring slowed in the fourth quarter, Northwest closed out the game on an 8-0 run. The team’s defense also played a key role, with the Rangers recording 22 defensive rebounds—six more than Mississippi Delta—and totaling 12 steals. Starters Alorian Story, Dekyra Mitchell, and Takera Bland each contributed three steals.

Northwest capitalized on 26 turnovers by Mississippi Delta, turning them into points. Mitchell and Story combined for 51 of the team’s 78 points, with Mitchell scoring 27 on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range and Story adding 24 on 60% shooting. Story also led the team with 15 rebounds.

Following the game, Story credited team chemistry and offensive execution, saying, “It was just free basketball tonight. It was just fun basketball.” With the victory, Northwest secured its first 20-win season since 1998, when the team finished with 23 wins. The team also earned a top-four seed, a first-round bye, and a home playoff game in the upcoming Region 23 tournament. Northwest awaits its opponent, with their first playoff game scheduled for Saturday at Howard Coliseum.
