Northwest Mississippi Community College Tennis Teams Split Matches on Sophomore Day

Senatobia, Miss. — The Northwest Mississippi Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams split their matches against East Central and Weatherford on Saturday, their Sophomore Day. The women improved to a 4-5 record, while the men are now 5-4.

Both teams secured 5-4 victories over East Central. However, the women lost to Weatherford, ranked eighth in the MACCC, 6-3, while the men fell to Weatherford, ranked 10th nationally, 8-1.

In the conference match against East Central, the women’s doubles team of Ángela Ortiz-Sánchez and Meg Daves, along with Brooke Kicker and Ava McCain, won their matches at the second and third doubles courts. This gave NWCC a key advantage heading into singles, where sophomores Meg Daves and Ava McCain, along with freshman Brooke Kicker, clinched the victory with their singles wins.

The men’s team started similarly, winning at doubles with Jordan Mitchell and Holden Cooke securing victory at second doubles. The trio of sophomores Cooke, Mitchell, and Brady Holliman then clinched the match for Northwest with singles wins. Cooke defeated Braiden Estes, Mitchell beat Cory Smith, and Holliman bested Thomas Sumrall.

Against Weatherford, the women’s doubles team of Claudia Lopez Chaparro and Laura Cámara Blanco won at second doubles, but Weatherford took the match with wins in singles and doubles. The women’s singles featured competitive matches, with Lopez Chaparro and McCain earning wins, but Weatherford’s players ultimately secured the overall victory.

The men’s team faced a tough challenge against Weatherford, with Weatherford’s Matteo Cardoso and Santiago Hidalgo earning singles wins, and NWCC’s Carlos Diaz, Luca Morris, and Brady Holliman falling short in singles. NWCC’s Mitchell and Cooke won at doubles, but Weatherford’s team took the overall match.

The teams will head into spring break in good spirits and aim to build on their momentum as they continue MACCC play, according to school sources.
