No. 19 Southeastern Pulls Away From William Carey in Late Softball Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey softball faced No. 19 Southeastern Florida for five innings Saturday but fell 5-0 after a late rally by the Fire. The game started as a pitcher’s duel, with strong defense from both teams.

Carey starter Jayden Sawyer kept Southeastern off the scoreboard in the first two innings, stranding runners and striking out two batters to end each frame. Offensively, the Lady Crusaders showed promise early, with Liz Cross leading off with a single in the first inning and adding another hit in the third. Cross and Brooklyn Montana each contributed hits, and Caroline Lindsey drew a walk, loading the bases with two outs in the third. Southeastern escaped that threat with a strikeout, maintaining a scoreless tie.

After a nearly hour-long rain delay, Southeastern broke through in the sixth inning. The Fire drew two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Two walks and a single to right field drove in five runs, giving Southeastern a 4-0 lead. The Fire added an insurance run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring.

The Lady Crusaders will return to action Friday, Feb. 27, at the NAIA Lead-Off Classic in Columbus, Georgia. They will face Lindsey Wilson College at 10 a.m. and Truett McConnell at noon.
