No. 19 Ole Miss Women’s Basketball Falls to Texas A&M in Regular Season Finale
Oxford, Miss. — The University of Mississippi women’s basketball team, ranked No. 19/20, fell to Texas A&M 66-58 in the regular-season finale Sunday at the SJB Pavilion.
Cotie McMahon scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Ole Miss (21-10, 8-8 SEC). Her performance marked her 29th double-digit scoring game this season and pushed her past 600 points for the season, making her the seventh Rebel to reach that milestone. McMahon also surpassed 700 career rebounds and joined Ole Miss legend Armintie Price-Herrington as the only players in school history with 2,000 points, 700 rebounds, and 300 assists. She is one of two active SEC players with that stat line, sources said.
Texas A&M started strong, opening with a 10-point run that prompted a Rebel timeout. Ole Miss answered with a rally, including layups from Jayla Murray and Christeen Iwuala, narrowing the gap to single digits. The Aggies maintained a 23-13 lead after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Ole Miss’s offense improved, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers from Debreasha Powe and Tianna Thompson. The Rebels cut the lead to two points at one stage but trailed 37-30 at halftime.
The third quarter saw Texas A&M extend its lead despite efforts from Ole Miss. Latasha Lattimore hit two consecutive three-pointers, but the Aggies responded with a three of their own. McMahon scored five points over a 7-0 run that kept Ole Miss competitive. The period ended with Texas A&M ahead 53-45.
In the final quarter, McMahon scored two quick layups to bring Ole Miss within two. However, the Rebels’ offense stalled, and the Aggies pulled away for the win. Despite McMahon’s late efforts, Ole Miss was unable to overcome the deficit.
Ole Miss will participate in the SEC tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. As the seventh seed, the Rebels received a first-round bye and will face either Auburn or Texas A&M on March 5. The team’s season concludes with the tournament, which begins March 4, according to the school’s athletic department.
