No. 12 Jones College falls to No. 11 Alabama-South in first loss of season

ELLISVILLE — Jones College, ranked No. 12, lost a 5-4 match to No. 11 Alabama-South on Monday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex. It was the first loss of the season for the Bobcats, who are now 13-1, according to school officials.

The Coyotes improved to 17-8 with the victory. Jones will close out the MACCC regular season with a 2 p.m. match Tuesday against No. 19 Itawamba. The team will also face No. 8 Wallace State-Hanceville at 1 p.m. Saturday in Meridian in their final regular season match.

Alabama-South took two of three doubles matches. Tom Garrett of Australia and Juan Francisco Pereyra of Argentina defeated Alvaro Velasco and David Gimenez, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. Ridge Jones of Northeast Jones and Felipe Morales of Ecuador lost 8-5 to Nils Guyot and Milan Olagnon at No. 2 doubles. Reese Touchet of Madison Central and Ryan Roth of Resurrection Catholic fell 8-6 to Zachary Regan and Maximo Yanez at No. 3 doubles.

Pereyra won at No. 1 singles, beating Julien Cordeau 6-2, 6-4. Tom Garrett defeated Gimenez 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2 singles. Morales rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Olagnon at No. 3 singles. Velasco outlasted Jones 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Yanez defeated Roth 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. Luke Westmoreland of Grenada fell to Yanez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

In extra matches, Crews Cockrell of West Jones lost to Regan 8-4, and Nicholas Marengo of Forrest County AHS was defeated by Regan 8-1.
