Nicholls Softball Blanks Alcorn 10-0 in Five Innings

Thibodaux, Louisiana — Averi Paden pitched four scoreless innings to lead the Nicholls State Colonels to a 10-0 victory over Alcorn State in five innings during a nonconference softball game at Swanner Field. Paden allowed only two hits, walked none and struck out three before Lexi Dulany closed the game in the fifth.

The Colonels’ pitching staff held Alcorn hitless through the first two innings and finished with three total hits without allowing a run. Nicholls’s offense ignited early, sending nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Leadoff hitter and second baseman Claire Sisco singled and stole second, then scored on an Erin Krause groundout.

Reagan Heflin’s fielder’s choice brought home Madison Moak, and Gabby Higbee singled to score Heflin. Laylin Sturm capped the inning with a two-run single, giving Nicholls a 5-0 lead after one. The Colonels continued their offensive surge in the second, with Moak doubling home Sisco, Krause adding an RBI double, and Heflin singling in another run. Nevanna Smith’s single down the line in left scored Heflin, extending the lead to 9-0 after two innings.

Alcorn’s only run came in the fourth when Ally Mooneyham doubled and scored on a groundout by Sydni Stevens. Mooneyham finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Sisco went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Moak was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Jamyiyah Cotten, Paris Thompson and Olivia Miller contributed hits for the Braves, who managed just three hits and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. Chiara Olison took the loss, allowing six hits and five runs in one inning. Miller pitched three innings, surrendering seven hits and five runs.

Alcorn, now 9-15, looks to end a seven-game losing streak this weekend at Texas Southern in a three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series in Houston, Texas. The series begins Friday at 4 p.m. Follow Alcorn State Sports on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for updates.
