Murphy’s Career-High Leads Mississippi Valley State Past Texas Southern on Senior Day

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Jaeda Murphy scored a career-high 22 points and shot 9-for-10 from the free-throw line to lead Mississippi Valley State to a 78-64 victory over Texas Southern on Sunday. The win marked the Devilettes’ first back-to-back victories of the season, and it came in their final home game.

Murphy also drained six field goals, tying her season best, and tied for the game high with five assists, according to school sources. Senior Janiya Jones added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Sydnei Marshall contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Marshall and Jones both hit multiple three-pointers in the game.

Senior Desiree Smith narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and 10 rebounds. The Devilettes improved to 6-19 overall and 5-9 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Texas Southern dropped to 9-18 and 5-10 in league play.

Mississippi Valley State returns to action Monday at Grambling State in a makeup game postponed due to winter weather. The team aims to carry momentum into the SWAC Tournament, which begins next month.
