Montevallo edges Delta State 1-0 in pitchers’ duel
The University of Montevallo defeated Delta State 1-0 in a tightly contested pitchers’ duel Thursday afternoon at Ferriss Field.
Adrian Byrd pitched 7.1 innings for Delta State, matching a career high with 12 strikeouts. The left-hander allowed five hits and one run, carrying a no-hit bid into the fourth inning. Despite his strong performance, the Falcons scored the game’s only run on a solo home run by Hollon Brock in the fourth inning.
Delta State had opportunities but could not capitalize. The team stranded six runners, with its best chance coming in the seventh when Jacob Palazzo doubled and advanced to third. Montevallo starter Zach Wyatt escaped the jam, preserving the shutout.
At the plate, Austin Batts extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single and went 1-for-4 overall. Ryan Herbison pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, striking out two to keep the game within reach.
Zach Wyatt earned the win with a complete-game shutout, striking out seven. The series concludes Friday with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. Central Time.
