Mississippi Valley State Sweeps Alcorn for Third Straight Win, Gets Above .500 in SWAC
Mississippi Valley State University’s baseball team defeated Alcorn State 13-10 on Saturday, earning its third straight win and breaking even in SWAC competition for the first time since 2022, according to school officials.
The Diamond Devils improved to 6-6 in league play and 10-18 overall. The Braves fell to 1-11 in conference and 7-25 overall. The game was played at Willie E. “Rat” McGowan Stadium in Lorman, Mississippi.
Mississippi Valley’s recent streak has lifted the team to a .500 record in SWAC play for the first time since 2022, when they started 2-1. The win also marks the second SWAC sweep for the team this season, their first since 2009, according to team statistics.
Top performers included Tanner Aoki, who drew four walks, singled, and scored three runs. Cody Leming went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Chris Brown recorded his second save of the season, working around a bases-loaded, no-out situation to preserve the win.
Tom Early contributed with a two-RBI triple and a two-RBI single, driving in four runs overall. Both Chris Soeder and Gabe Huelsing had multi-hit games, combining to cross the plate three times. Soeder also added a double and an RBI to his line.
The team will take a four-day break for Easter before returning to play Tuesday at 6 p.m. against ULM in Monroe, Louisiana. Fans can follow the Delta Devils on social media for updates.
