Mississippi Valley State Men’s Basketball Season Ends in SWAC Tournament First Round

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — Mississippi Valley State University’s men’s basketball season concluded with a 77-52 loss to Grambling State in the first round of the SWAC tournament at Gateway Center Arena.

The #12 seed Delta Devils, who finished the season with a 3-30 record overall and a 2-16 mark in conference play, faced the #9 seed Tigers, who ended their season at 14-18 and 7-11 in the SWAC.

Michael James, the SWAC Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference First Team selection, led Mississippi Valley State with 23 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. He shot 43.8% from the field and 57.1% from three-point range. Lamont Sams scored nine off the bench, while George Ivory III added five points.

Patrick Punch and Samuel Murray each contributed five rebounds, and X’Zaevion Barnett dished out three assists. Despite James’s effort, the Delta Devils were unable to overcome Grambling State’s lead, which grew throughout the game.

The season included notable wins against Texas Southern on Senior Night, at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, and a non-conference victory over MUW. Mississippi Valley State’s athletic programs will now shift focus to the offseason and recruiting efforts.
