Mississippi Valley Falls to Alabama A&M Despite Strong Shooting Performance

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Mississippi Valley State University’s men’s basketball team fell to Alabama A&M, 72-65, despite a strong shooting performance and solid defense, according to a game report.

The Delta Devils shot 60% from three-point range (6-for-10), their best percentage of the season. They also allowed a season-low nine assists from their opponents. However, a 17-6 run by Alabama A&M midway through the second half shifted momentum in favor of the Bulldogs.

Mississippi Valley, which is 1-24 overall and 0-11 in SWAC play, was led by Patrick Punch, who returned after missing three games. Punch scored 12 points on 4-for-9 shooting, grabbed four rebounds, and added a steal and an assist. Michael James scored 21 points, his fifth consecutive game with over 20 points, shooting 6-for-12 overall and 4-for-5 from three-point range.

Daniel Mayfield contributed 16 points and led the team with seven rebounds. He also added three steals and three assists. X’Zaevion Barnett dished out five assists, while Mussa Mzein and Tyrone Iroghama scored seven and six points, respectively.

Alabama A&M improved to 14-11 overall and 7-5 in SWAC play. The Bulldogs hold a series lead over Mississippi Valley of 34-23 since the 1983-84 season, including an 11-game winning streak. The last time the Delta Devils defeated Alabama A&M was on February 10, 2020.
