Mississippi State’s Coach Jans Discusses Team Performance and Player Development

Mississippi State men’s basketball coach Chris Jans spoke about the team’s recent performances during a media session Monday. Jans highlighted increased trust in Jamarion Davis-Fleming, noting he deserved to start the second half of the game against Ole Miss after a strong first-half showing.

Jans explained that lineup decisions depend on foul situations and which combinations of players are playing the best, emphasizing the importance of performance over fixed rotations. He praised Davis-Fleming’s second-half performance and contributions overall.

Addressing the team’s struggles with consistency, Jans said that while first-half defense has been strong, second-half performance has been lacking. He said the staff is exploring various strategies, including lineup changes and defensive schemes, to improve stamina and focus in the latter part of games.

Jans also discussed Sergej Macura’s development, noting that the player’s game has started to slow down as he becomes more comfortable with the college level and the team’s system. Jans called Macura a coachable player who is committed to winning and team success.

Looking ahead to an upcoming game against Texas A&M, Jans described the Aggies’ balanced scoring as a major challenge. He said their versatile defense, which includes full-court pressure and frequent trapping, will require the Bulldogs to be prepared for multiple looks and strategies.

Jans emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and consistency over both halves of the game. He acknowledged that despite good starts, the team has struggled to sustain its level of play and is working to address this issue through practice and game-time adjustments. Regarding veteran players Jayden Epps and Josh Hubbard, Jans offered support, saying both are aware of their recent off nights and are motivated to improve and contribute.
