Mississippi State women’s tennis set for first road matches of season
Mississippi State women’s tennis is scheduled to begin its first true road trip of the season this week, traveling to face Furman University and Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs will play Furman at 12 p.m. Thursday in Greenville, South Carolina, followed by a match against Georgia Tech at 10 a.m. Saturday in Atlanta.
The team’s initial three away contests were canceled due to weather, but coach Chris Hooshyar’s squad is eager to continue its strong non-conference performance. The Bulldogs have posted a 26–3 record in non-conference play during Hooshyar’s tenure at Mississippi State.
Last weekend, the Bulldogs swept three matches in Starkville. They defeated Georgia Southern 5–2, shut out Alcorn State 4–0, and won their doubleheader against Louisiana Tech and Bellarmine with scores of 6–1 and 4–0, respectively.
The team’s doubles duo of Gianna Oboniye and Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz is ranked ninth nationally by the ITA. The pair earned its first victory of the season with a 6–0 win over Georgia Southern’s Mackenzie Leopold and Evelyn Warkentin.
Furman recently lost to Charlotte 5–2 in North Carolina. The Paladins have competed in the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic annually since 2017. The only previous dual match between Furman and Mississippi State occurred in 2021, when the Bulldogs won 6–1 in Greenville.
Mississippi State has faced Georgia Tech twice in program history, with the most recent meeting in 1991 resulting in a 5–4 Bulldogs victory. The Yellow Jackets are part of a non-conference slate that Mississippi State has historically dominated, and the Bulldogs aim to extend that streak this weekend.
