Mississippi State Women’s Golf Splits Opening Day at Old Barnwell Derby Match Play
AIKEN, S.C. — Mississippi State women’s golf split its first two matches at the Old Barnwell Derby Match Play on Sunday. The Bulldogs defeated No. 17 Ole Miss in the morning but lost to No. 5 Auburn in the afternoon, according to the team.
Avery Weed and Izzy Pellot led the Bulldogs with individual wins. Weed defeated both opponents in 15 holes, earning two 4&3 victories. She maintained a four-hole lead with three holes remaining in her match. Weed did not trail in either of her matches, the team said.
Pellot opened her day with a 3&2 win against Ole Miss, never trailing in the match. She built her lead to as large as four holes before finishing with a one-hole advantage against Auburn, regaining the lead on the 16th hole and holding it throughout.
Moa Stridh earned her first collegiate match play victory with a 1-up win over Ole Miss. Ines Belchior, competing against Auburn, finished tied after 18 holes but ultimately lost in 22 holes.
The Bulldogs will have a day off Monday due to forecasted weather and will conclude the event Tuesday against Wake Forest. Live scoring is available at scoreboard.clippd.com, according to the team.
Mississippi State finished with a 3-2 record in the matches. They defeated Ole Miss 3-2 and lost to Auburn 3-2. The team will continue its schedule Tuesday against Wake Forest, ranked eighth nationally.
