Mississippi State Softball Pitching Staff Excels Under Coach T

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Mississippi State’s softball pitching staff has made a significant impact this season, with the No. 12 Bulldogs starting 15-1. Led by head coach Taryne Mowatt-McKinney, the team’s pitchers are among the best nationally in strikeouts, complete games, and other categories, according to sources.

Goold, a transfer from Chattanooga, enjoys film study and numbers, while Ammon prefers a less analytical approach. Despite their different methods, both have contributed to the team’s success. Goold and Ammon each have sub-1.00 earned run averages heading into this weekend’s Tiger Invitational hosted by Clemson.

Mowatt-McKinney, a former All-American and Women’s College World Series Most Outstanding Player at Arizona, has been instrumental in developing the staff’s talent since arriving in Starkville. Since her arrival two-plus seasons ago, the team has increased complete games from 28 to 51.

Her coaching philosophy emphasizes trust and individualized attention. Mowatt-McKinney said she tailors her approach based on each pitcher’s personality and preferences. She maintains open communication, which she believes is key to the staff’s cohesion and performance.
