Mississippi State men’s tennis team sweeps singles to beat Indiana 6-1

Bloomington, Indiana — The No. 7 Mississippi State men’s tennis team rallied from an early deficit to defeat Indiana 6-1 on Sunday. The Bulldogs dropped the doubles point but swept all six singles matches to earn their fourth win of the season, according to school officials.

Mississippi State lost the doubles point after Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez lost a close tiebreak on Court 1. Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano responded with a win on Court 2, and Indiana secured the point on Court 3, with Braeden Gelletich and Facundo Yunis defeating Bryan Hernandez Cortes and Michal Novansky.

In singles play, Jovanovic tied the match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jip van Assendelft. Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes put the Bulldogs ahead with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Ben Pomeranets. Martinez Serrano extended the lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Michael Andre, and Baroni clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Facundo Yunis.

The Bulldogs continued to play after securing the win. Sanchez Martinez rallied past No. 105 Landau before Landau retired due to injury. Raphael Vaksmann completed the sweep with a three-set comeback over Braeden Gelletich. Mississippi State’s resilience highlighted its team depth early in the season, according to coaches.

Mississippi State now holds a 4-0 record. The team will host Santa Clara on Saturday for its home opener, officials said. Head coach Matt Roberts earned his 216th career win, tying for second all-time among Bulldogs coaches.
