Mississippi State edges Ole Miss 5-4 in SEC baseball series opener

OXFORD, Miss. — Ole Miss baseball fell to Mississippi State 5-4 Friday evening in the opening game of their Southeastern Conference series at Swayze Field.

Judd Utermark and Austin Fawley each homered for the Rebels. Utermark’s blast was his 11th of the season and tied him for fifth-most in Ole Miss history, while Fawley’s three-run shot in the seventh put Ole Miss ahead temporarily.

Ole Miss led 3-1 after Utermark’s homer in the fourth, but Mississippi State rallied in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the ninth on consecutive hits, sealing the victory.

Ole Miss starter Hunter Elliott pitched 5.1 innings, striking out seven. Taylor Rabe took the loss after pitching 2.2 innings in relief. Mississippi State’s Tyler Pitzer earned the win.

The series continues Saturday with a game scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on SECN+.
