Mississippi College’s Phil Nelson Named GSC Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Mississippi College guard Phil Nelson was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday. This is his second such honor of the 2025–26 season, according to the league.

Nelson played a key role in the Choctaws’ lone game of the week, scoring 19 points in a 69-65 victory over rival Delta State on Jan. 18. The freshman added five rebounds and three assists, helping the team withstand a late rally by the Statesmen.

He was efficient from the field, shooting 5-for-10 overall and making 7-of-9 free throws. His performance contributed to Mississippi College’s 1-0 record in Gulf South Conference play for the week.

Nelson previously earned GSC Freshman of the Week honors on Dec. 9, making him one of the league’s few freshmen to receive the award multiple times this season. The team continues conference play later this week as the Choctaws aim to build momentum behind their young backcourt.
