Mississippi College women’s basketball outlasts AUM in overtime
Mississippi College’s women’s basketball team edged AUM in overtime, 82-80, Saturday at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Choctaws improved to 8-11 overall and 7-7 in Gulf South Conference play.
Valencia McFall led MC with a career-high 26 points and added 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. The Ocean Springs native scored her most points this season and her third 20-plus point game.
Head coach Rachel Travis praised McFall’s growth, saying, “We are going to be very good down the stretch because of her.” She also highlighted McFall’s patience in her senior season, noting her improvement from last year’s averages of 7.5 to 8.5 points.
Abigail Winslow scored 14 points, including three steals, while Karly Ivy set a season high with six assists and scored 13 points, making three 3-pointers. Vivian Sketoe contributed 12 points and six steals. For the first time this season, four MC players scored at least 10 points in a game.
The game was competitive throughout, with AUM leading early before MC rallied in the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 20-10 to take a 30-29 halftime lead. The Choctaws managed to maintain their edge through the third quarter, shooting efficiently and trading leads with AUM in the final regulation minutes.
In the closing moments of regulation, Abigail Winslow’s free throw tied the game at 70. Samya Brooks’ potential game-winning 3-pointer missed as time expired. During overtime, MC’s free-throw shooting proved critical. The team sank nine of 12 attempts, helping secure the victory.
Brooks led all scorers with 30 points, making 12 of 21 field goals and contributing defensively with three steals. Andie Flatgard added 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and six rebounds. Navaeh Small grabbed 17 rebounds, with 10 on defense, and added two blocks and steals.
MC returns to action Thursday at West Alabama, starting a three-game road trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., according to the team.
