Mississippi College women’s basketball beats Lee 65-58 to snap losing streak
The Mississippi College women’s basketball team defeated Lee University 65-58 Tuesday at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Choctaws made 25 free throws and forced 13 steals to secure the win, snapping a five-game series losing streak.
MC improved to 5-9 overall and 4-5 in Gulf South Conference play. The victory marked only the second in program history against the Flames, with the first coming Jan. 2, 2024, in Clinton. Nia Coleman led MC with 24 points, hitting six of nine field goals and converting all nine free throws. She also added three steals and seven rebounds.
Valencia McFall scored 13 points, making seven of eight free throws and collecting three steals. Abigail Winslow contributed defensively with two blocks and three steals. Faith Quick scored a career-high eight points. The Choctaws capitalized on turnovers, converting eight points from Lee’s seven giveaways, and hit two three-pointers in the game.
Both teams played strong defense, each recording four steals. MC led 12-10 after the first quarter. In the second, MC took advantage of Lee’s fouls, making nine of 10 free throws and holding a 29-26 lead at halftime. The Blue and Gold’s defense limited Lee to one offensive rebound and forced four steals in the first half.
Lee outscored MC 16-11 in the third quarter, with the Flames shooting better from beyond the arc. Anna Muhonen sank two free throws at the buzzer, giving Lee a 42-40 advantage heading into the final quarter. MC responded in the fourth, converting 11 points off turnovers and limiting its own to two, while making eight of nine free throws to extend its lead.
Anna Muhonen led Lee with 18 points, nine rebounds, and two steals. Abby McFarland added 14 points, and Libby Privett scored eight. MC hosts Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Notes from the game indicate the Choctaws are 5-0 when leading or tied at halftime and achieved their first comeback win of the season after trailing with five minutes remaining.
