Mississippi College Track and Field Sets Records at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Mississippi College track and field team had a strong showing at the Samford Open over the weekend, earning multiple event wins, school records, and conference-leading performances at the Birmingham CrossPlex, according to the school.

On the women’s side, freshman Mallory Dial won the high jump with a clearance of 1.70 meters, tying the school record and ranking first in the Gulf South Conference and 13th nationally in NCAA Division II. Senior Lauren Wallace finished second in the women’s mile with a time of 4:52.51, breaking her previous school record and ranking third in the GSC and ninth nationally.

Distance runner Bre Bell won the 3,000 meters in a personal-best 9:50.71, which ranks 14th nationally and second in the conference. In the weight throw, Kennedy Thompson recorded a personal-best 17.25 meters to place third overall, leading the GSC rankings. Freshman Haylei Mason added a sixth-place finish with a personal record of 8.90 meters, ranking third in the conference.

In sprint events, Alana Green posted an indoor personal best of 24.91 seconds in the 200 meters, ranking first in the GSC. Elyse Dorris also achieved a personal best in the 200 meters with a time of 26.26 seconds, while Jane Matthew Reed shaved nearly three seconds off her previous best in the 400 meters with a PR of 1:00.77.

On the men’s side, the team continued to set personal records and achieve conference-leading marks. Freshman Brodie Roberts ran a personal-best 6.92 seconds in the 60 meters, finishing 12th overall. Brett Tyler marked a personal best of 12.57 meters (41 feet, 3 inches) in the shot put, placing 25th. James David Miller threw a personal-best 18.16 meters in the weight throw, which ranks first in the GSC. Freshman Tristan Jusino-Lansing finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best of 8.17 seconds and clocked an 8.17 later in the meet.

Senior Matthew Singletary posted a personal record of 8:33.96 in the men’s 3,000 meters, finishing fourth and ranking seventh in the conference. Head coach Joe Snyder praised his team’s progress, saying, “We had a lot of athletes take big steps forward this weekend. To see personal records, school records, and conference-leading marks this early in the season shows the work our student-athletes have put in. We’re excited about the momentum we’re building and know there’s still more in the tank.”

Mississippi College will return to competition Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Pitt State Invitational in Pittsburg, Kansas, starting at 10 a.m., according to the school.
