Mississippi College Men’s Tennis Upsets No. 4 UT Tyler, Sweeps Lynn

CLINTON, Miss. — Mississippi College men’s tennis posted an impressive weekend with victories over a nationally ranked opponent and a conference rival. The Choctaws defeated No. 4 UT Tyler 4-1 on Friday before dominating Lynn 7-0 on Saturday, according to school officials.

Against UT Tyler, Mississippi College lost the doubles point but rallied in singles to secure the upset. Mattia Ricci led the comeback with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Matias Ruiz fought through a three-set match to win 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2. Sergio Ramirez Ocana added a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 5, and Lucas Cavalcanti de Carvalho sealed the team win with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6.

The Choctaws carried their momentum into Saturday’s match against Lynn, winning all singles and doubles matches. In doubles, Mikayel Avanesyan and Charles Lefort at No. 2 and Sergio Ramirez Ocana and Joshua Hinton at No. 3 secured the doubles point. Mississippi College then swept singles competition, with Ricci winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. Avanesyan defeated his opponent in straight sets at No. 3, and Florian Walcher controlled his match at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Ramirez Ocana contributed with a three-set win at No. 5, and Cavalcanti de Carvalho clinched the match by retirement at No. 6.

The team is set to return to action next week in Florida, facing Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, March 11, at 11 a.m. CT in Cocoa, followed by a match against Saint Leo on Thursday, March 12, at 1 p.m. CT in Saint Leo.
