Mississippi College falls to West Florida in men’s basketball

Clinton, Miss. — Mississippi College fell to West Florida 83-64 Thursday night at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Chargers improved to 19-6 overall and 12-5 in Gulf South Conference play, while the Blue and Gold dropped to 10-14 and 7-11 in conference.

West Florida jumped out early, with Christian Monroe scoring a jumper just 20 seconds into the game. The Chargers extended their lead with three three-pointers from different players, building a 7-0 run. Mississippi College’s Josh Holman scored a layup to get the home team on the board, but West Florida maintained its advantage with consistent scoring and a rebounding margin of 39-27 at halftime.

West Florida led 42-30 at the break. In the second half, the Chargers continued to push, with Monroe adding a layup at 5:48 to make it 77-52. Mississippi College struggled to close the gap despite efforts from Avaughn Johnson, who made a three-pointer at 14:18. Phil Nelson contributed with a fast-break dunk and multiple free throws, but the Blue and Gold could not catch up.

The game ended with a layup from Judah Land, assisted by Nelson, sealing the victory for West Florida. Holman and Johnson each scored 15 points for Mississippi College. Holman shot 6 for 10 from the field and added five rebounds. Johnson made two three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. Nelson scored 14 points on eight free throws and added nine rebounds. Powe finished with nine points and two rebounds.

The Blue and Gold will host Valdosta State on Saturday at 4 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton.
