Mississippi College Baseball Splits Doubleheader at AUM
Montgomery, Alabama — Mississippi College split a Gulf South Conference baseball doubleheader with Auburn University at Montgomery on Saturday at the AUM Baseball Complex. The Choctaws won the first game 9-3 but lost the second 7-5.
In the opening game, MC’s offense was powered by two home runs and a triple. Alex Johnson and Nick Slonaker each hit three-run home runs, and Cade Gadman and Tyrus Williams added two hits apiece. Ty Murphy scored after a triple and drew a walk. Coby Gollott pitched 7.2 innings, striking out a career-high 10 batters, and Kamryn Carlisle finished with 1.1 innings of no-hit ball, striking out two.
The Choctaws scored first in the second inning when Johnson walked and scored on a bases-loaded walk by Creek Robertson. Murphy scored on a wild pitch, giving MC an early 2-0 lead. AUM cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, but MC responded with a three-run homer by Johnson in the seventh. The Warhawks scored two unearned runs in the eighth but MC sealed the win with a three-run homer by Slonaker in the ninth.
The second game saw MC jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Robertson. However, AUM rallied in the sixth, scoring five runs with key hits from Brice Ainsworth and Kurt Kizer. The Warhawks’ Kizer led the team with three hits. MC attempted a comeback with a two-run homer from Jake LaRocca in the seventh but fell short.
Will Daniel took the loss for MC, allowing four earned runs in relief. Cooper Cooksey started and struck out seven batters. Drew Cashin earned the win for AUM, pitching six innings and striking out eight. The Choctaws return to action Tuesday against Ouachita Baptist at Frierson Field, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
