Millsaps Women’s Tennis Beats Oglethorpe 5-2 in Georgia

The Millsaps College women’s tennis team concluded its weekend trip to Georgia with a 5-2 win over Oglethorpe University on Sunday. The Majors had previously lost 7-0 to Berry College on Saturday.

In doubles play against Oglethorpe, sophomore Skylar Spinks and Smith teamed up for a 6-2 victory. Freshman Bella-Bennett Graham and sophomore Virginia Trible secured the doubles point with a 7-6 (7-1) tiebreaker.

In singles matches, Spinks and sophomore Riley McClain each won in straight sets, with scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2, respectively. Smith also won her match 6-2, 6-1, while Graham emerged victorious 6-3, 6-3. Oglethorpe claimed wins on courts 3 and 6 by default, according to the school’s release.

The team’s strong performance capped a weekend where they also competed against Berry College, where they fell 7-0. Against Berry, sophomore Malakie Smith pushed her match to three sets, ultimately losing 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (12-10).

The men’s team also traveled to Georgia but faced a tough schedule. They lost 6-1 to Berry on Saturday and 6-1 to Oglethorpe on Sunday. Notably, freshman Jon Nguyen won his singles match against Oglethorpe 6-4, 6-2, in one of the few positive results for the Majors.
