Millsaps Women’s Basketball rallies in second half to beat Trinity 73-72
The Millsaps College women’s basketball team edged Trinity University 73-72 on Sunday in San Antonio, marking a key conference victory. The Majors (15-6, 6-4 Southern Athletic Association) outscored the Tigers (13-9, 9-2 SAA) in the third quarter and capitalized on 11 steals to generate 22 points off turnovers.
The game was closely contested, with nine ties and 15 lead changes. Millsaps junior Tia Anderson led all scorers with 20 points, adding 13 rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Senior Elyse Warren contributed 17 points and 19 rebounds. Junior Garin Freeman scored 16 points, tying her career high with five steals, while senior Maddy Maw added 11 points, including three three-pointers.
The game began with Freeman scoring two consecutive layups to tie the score at 4-4. She continued her strong play with a jumper that put Millsaps ahead 10-6. Trinity responded with a three-pointer and regained the lead, going into the first quarter with a 24-21 advantage. The Tigers maintained their lead through halftime, holding a 40-31 edge.
In the third quarter, Millsaps mounted a comeback. Anderson scored back-to-back baskets, including a three-pointer, to cut the deficit to 46-40. With 6:12 remaining in the quarter, Trinity turned the ball over, and Anderson scored on a fast break to narrow the gap to 44-40. Millsaps took its first lead since the first half after Anderson’s jumper made it 47-46.
With 1:41 left in the third, Warren received a no-look pass from Freeman under the basket, tying the game at 49-49. The final quarter featured back-and-forth action. Trinity pushed ahead to 64-59 early in the quarter, but Millsaps responded with a three-pointer from Bailey Johnson to cut the deficit to 64-62. Freeman’s jumper with 2:11 remaining tied the game at 70.
Freeman’s free throw with three seconds left secured the narrow victory for Millsaps. The team celebrated their win on Trinity Senior Day. The Majors will host Centre College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. inside the Hangar Dome. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
