Millsaps Women’s Basketball Dominates Sewanee, 77-55
The Millsaps women’s basketball team defeated Sewanee 77-55 Sunday inside the Hangar Dome. The Majors (17-6, 8-4 Southern Athletic Association) capitalized on 21 Sewanee turnovers, converting them into 24 points. Millsaps also maintained a rebounding edge, grabbing 41 total boards.
Junior Garin Freeman scored 19 points, dished out five assists, and recorded three steals. Senior Elyse Warren contributed a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Classmate Maddy Maw added 12 points and three assists after a strong performance against Centre on Friday.
The game started with Millsaps taking an early lead, sparked by Freeman’s jumper. Junior Tia Anderson added two free throws off a defensive rebound, and Warren closed the first quarter with a layup and free throws, giving the team a 22-10 lead. Millsaps dominated the second quarter, outscoring Sewanee 32-10. Freeman contributed with a three-pointer and a layup before the buzzer, while Maw added consecutive baskets, including a three-pointer assisted by Freeman.
In the third quarter, both teams scored 14 points, but Millsaps maintained a significant lead. Warren made an early free throw and layup, assisted by Freeman. Throughout the fourth quarter, Millsaps kept a strong advantage. Sophomore Dove Leach added a jumper in the paint to push the score to 70-34. Sewanee attempted a comeback with a three-pointer and free throws, but Millsaps responded with a three from freshman Zyon Moffite, assisted by Kiayalee King, to extend its lead.
