Millsaps Baseball Upsets No. 8 Belhaven in Series Opener
Millsaps College defeated No. 8 Belhaven 14-7 Tuesday night at Twenty Field in Jackson, Mississippi, in the opening game of the Cowboy Maloney Series. The win marked the Majors’ first top-10 victory since April 1, 2023, according to school officials.
Senior pitcher Ryan Laiche earned the win after pitching four innings, striking out four and allowing one run. Starter Sam Thomas went two innings, allowing one run and striking out one. Freshman Carter Guillory closed the game with one strikeout in the ninth.
The Majors’ offense was led by Wes Carr, who hit a home run, scored two runs, and drove in two RBIs. Carston Williams also contributed significantly with two hits, four RBIs, and a home run. Wesley Grant scored three runs and doubled, while Layne Cross had three hits, one RBI, and a stolen base. EJ Ousley added a run, hit, RBI, and stolen base in the effort.
Millsaps scored five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by two home runs, to take control of the game. The team built its lead with key offensive plays, including stolen bases and timely hitting. Belhaven scored first with a run in the top of the first and added four runs in the third to lead 5-0 before the Majors responded.
The game featured strong offensive performances from Millsaps, including a home run by Williams and Carr, and a rally in the fourth inning that put the Majors ahead. The team continued to extend its lead through the late innings, ultimately securing the victory.
