Millsaps Baseball Rallies Past Huntingdon in Extra Innings
The Millsaps College baseball team edged Huntingdon College 12-11 in 12 innings Wednesday at Twenty Field. The game featured a dramatic comeback by the Majors, who overcame an eighth-inning deficit to secure the victory, according to team sources.
Huntingdon, which is receiving votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll, built an 8-0 lead early in the game. The Hawks scored one run in the first inning, four in the third and three more in the fifth. Millsaps began its rally in the bottom of the fifth, with freshman Hudson Moberly driving in two runs via a sacrifice fly and a single by Sam Thomas. Junior Wesley Grant added two RBIs and a double later in the inning.
The Majors continued their comeback in the seventh, when Thomas hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. Huntindon responded with a run in the eighth, making it 9-6. Millsaps then scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 9, highlighted by a two-run double from Grant and an RBI single from freshman Dominic Mendieta.
In the ninth, Millsaps took a one-run lead after a clutch sacrifice fly by Carston Williams. Huntingdon responded in the top of the 10th with a run to tie it again. Neither team scored in the 10th and 11th innings, sending the game into extras.
The Majors loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 12th. Mendieta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home the winning run. Millsaps improved to 4-4 with the victory, which was highlighted by strong pitching performances from senior Andrew Bradley and sophomore Cam Cressend. Bradley pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and earning a strikeout.
Millsaps is scheduled to host Hardin-Simmons University at 12 p.m. Saturday at Twenty Field as part of the Belhaven/Millsaps Tournament. Live video and stats will be available at gomajors.com.
