MC Women’s Basketball Beats Delta State 69-62 at Home

Mississippi College’s women’s basketball team secured a 69-62 victory over Delta State University at A.E. Wood Coliseum. The Choctaws capitalized on 17 points off turnovers and remained undefeated in the series at home in recent years, winning three consecutive games and claiming seven of the last 11 meetings.

MC improved to 6-10 overall and 5-6 in Gulf South Conference play. The Lady Statesmen fell to 8-8 overall and 6-5 in league action. Vivian Sketoe led the Choctaws with 16 points, making six of 12 field goals and adding three steals. Nia Coleman scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Abigail Winslow was perfect from the field with eight points on three-for-three shooting and four rebounds.

The Choctaws took control early, outscoring Delta State 18-6 in the first quarter with a balanced offensive effort. They converted three three-pointers from six attempts and forced six turnovers, resulting in five points. Delta State was limited to just three baskets on 16 attempts during that period.

In the second quarter, MC extended its lead by converting six steals into points and maintaining a slight edge in free throw shooting, hitting five of six attempts. Delta State struggled with eight turnovers, which hindered their ability to close the gap. The halftime score was 37-24 in favor of the Choctaws.

Mississippi College, which is 6-0 when leading or tied at halftime, continued to press in the third quarter, scoring six points in the paint despite being outscored 18-15. The team’s seven rebounds, including two on offense, provided second-chance opportunities. Heading into the final period, MC led 52-42.

The Choctaws capitalized on free throws, converting six of 15 attempts, and forced three turnovers in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Jariyah Williamson contributed 11 points and 11 rebounds for MC, while Bramyia Johnson added 11 points on five-of-nine shooting. Mississippi College will travel to face Union University on Thursday, Jan. 22, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
