Lamar Men’s Tennis Sweeps Alcorn State at Home
Vicksburg, Miss. — Lamar’s men’s tennis team defeated Alcorn State 7-0 Sunday morning at Hall’s Ferry Tennis Courts. The Cardinals improved to 3-7 with the victory, while the Braves dropped to 3-3.
Lamar took the doubles point with wins in all three matches. The closest contest was at No. 2 doubles, where Fabian Anthin and Vicente Monge edged Alcorn’s Matthew Holl and Vicent Llobell Buigues 7-5.
In singles play, Buigues, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, pushed Lamar’s Stefano Chappuis to a tiebreak in the first set but ultimately fell 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Chappuis won the second set comfortably, sealing the straight-set victory.
Fabian Juarez of Alcorn battled at No. 4 singles but was defeated 6-4, 6-4 by Lamar’s Guy Dagan. On court one, Rintaro Shukuda secured the win for Lamar with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Alcorn’s Sebastian Griffiths, a freshman from Neath, Wales.
The teams will meet again after a break when Alcorn hosts Incarnate Word for a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 14, starting at 10 a.m. in Vicksburg.
