Lady Bears fall to Wolves after late-game surge

Wesson, Miss. — Southwest Mississippi Women’s Basketball team fell to the Co-Lin Wolves 51-38 Thursday night in a game marked by a slow start and a late surge by the Wolves.

Mercedes Dorsey scored the first points for Southwest, helping the team to a low-scoring first half. Mady Smith contributed five points in the final 1:30 of the first quarter, including a three-pointer, giving the Lady Bears a 9-7 lead at the end of the quarter. Both teams struggled offensively in the second quarter, but Shanell Celestine made four free throws to extend the Lady Bears’ lead to 18-15 at halftime.

The third quarter was competitive, with multiple lead changes. Smith scored four straight points to put Southwest ahead with 1:07 remaining in the quarter. However, Co-Lin responded quickly, taking a 29-28 lead into the final period. In the fourth quarter, Dorsey scored eight points, but her efforts weren’t enough to overcome the Wolves’ lead. Southwest ultimately lost, 51-38.

Mercedes Dorsey led the Lady Bears with 10 points. Mady Smith added nine points. Southwest Mississippi, now 7-17 overall and 3-8 in conference play, will host Pearl River on Monday, Feb. 23, in their next game.
